Montrell Washington aims to make the Giants keep him by Week 1

At just 26 years old, Montrell Washington has already shared the field with both Patrick Mahomes and Russell Wilson during offensive meetings. He refers to the latter as the “GOAT.”

Washington has been part of a talented wide receiver group featuring players like Deandre Hopkins, Jerry Jeudy, Juju Smith-Schuster, and Courtland Sutton. He boasts a Super Bowl ring from 2023 with the Chiefs.

His journey to this point is somewhat unconventional, not fitting the mold of typical bubble players. Despite not having impressive stats—he hasn’t caught a pass since 2023—he’s surrounded by vast football wisdom, being drafted by the Broncos in the fifth round of the 2022 draft.

During a recent practice, he made quite an impression, catching a couple of passes from Jackson Dart while also contributing as a return specialist, showcasing the qualities that make him valuable as he vies for a spot on the roster.

Reflecting on his experiences, he said, “You can play with Russell Wilson. I can play with Pat Mahomes. I can be around DeAndre Hopkins. I feel like anyone can play the ball.”

Having signed a futures deal with the Giants in February, Washington mentioned to Wilson that he “looks even better” than he did at the Broncos. However, he hasn’t maximized his previous chances.

When he played with Denver, he appeared in 15 games but only managed to catch four passes for a mere 2 yards, along with rushing for 30 yards and returning kicks and punts. After being released by the Broncos ahead of the 2023 season, he joined the Chiefs as a practice squad player, contributing to two Super Bowl wins during his tenure.

“It’s cool to get the ring, but now I want to actually play in that game,” Washington expressed. “That’s what I’ve set as my goal. I want to make a difference and be a significant part of the game.”

As he looks for stability in his career, he’s aware of the competition within the Giants’ receiving corps, which includes names like Wan’dale Robinson and Darius Slayton, alongside other hopefuls like Malik Nabers and Jalin Hyatt.

With limited spots available, Washington finds himself in a contest against both established players and undrafted free agents like Bo Collins, who have impressed the coaching staff.

Washington is eager to stand out, aiming to make it difficult for the team to let him go. Drawing from his experiences with the star-studded rosters he’s been part of, he combines their insights with what he’s learned from Wilson over the years.

He stated, “I’m ready,” reflecting on his dedication to making an impact on the field. Yet, he knows that a few good days at practice won’t secure a spot; he’ll need to prove himself throughout the summer and in pre-season games.

Ultimately, Washington has a unique background and experiences that many bubble players don’t get. Now, it’s about converting those experiences into an opportunity.

“I’ve learned from big names everywhere,” he noted, emphasizing his commitment to continual growth and learning in the sport.
