Canton, Ohio – Traylanth Shines in Preseason Opener
In his first game with the third team in five seasons, Traylanth delivered a standout performance, reminiscent of a top draft pick.
He threw for 120 yards and two touchdowns, leading the Chargers to a decisive 34-7 win over the Detroit Lions in the Hall of Fame Game, kicking off the NFL preseason.
Before the game, a moment of silence was observed for four individuals who tragically lost their lives this week in a shooting that targeted the NFL’s New York headquarters.
The shooter also caused injuries to a league employee, prompting NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell to visit the individual, who, according to Goodell, is showing signs of improvement.
In response, security measures have been heightened at Tom Benson Stadium and the Pro Football Hall of Fame Village.
Meanwhile, the Lions’ star players, including Jared Goff and Amon-Ra St. Brown, were unable to make an impact against the Chargers.
Detroit had shown promise last season, but this performance was a step back.
Justin Herbert was resting, along with many of the Chargers’ key players under the guidance of manager Jim Harbaugh. Rookie O’Mallion Hampton had two carries for nine yards as he got some time on the field.
The game started on a high note for the Chargers, who recovered a fumble during the opening kickoff, setting the tone for a quick 7-0 lead.
Traylanth demonstrated skill with touch passes, capped off by a five-yard touchdown catch even with a defender in close proximity.
Another remarkable moment came when Kimani Vidal scored from two yards out after undrafted rookie cornerback Nicco Reid intercepted a pass and made a significant return to the Lions’ six-yard line.
The Lions tried to answer back, but Allen’s interception on a pass intended for Tony Jefferson hampered their momentum.
Craig Reynolds managed a 3-yard touchdown run, but the Chargers maintained control as Lance connected with Tucker Fisk for a 19-yard gain, followed by a 15-yard touchdown pass to Keandre Lambert-Smith, leaving the half at a 21-7 advantage for the Chargers.
Having started only a handful of games in four NFL seasons, Traylanth’s journey has been anything but straightforward. After a stint with the 49ers, he made his way to the Chargers to fight for a backup position against veteran Taylor Heinicke, completing 13 of 20 passes before rookie DJ Uiagalelei took over.
In the Lions’ camp, Allen and Hendon Hooker were vying for the backup role behind Goff, but Allen’s two interceptions overshadowed his nine completions.
Detroit’s issues continued as their special teams faltered again in the third quarter, resulting in a muffed punt that led to a 23-yard field goal for Cameron Dicker, who finished the night perfect on field goals.
Hutchinson’s Anticipation
Aidan Hutchinson, the Lions’ star edge rusher, expressed excitement for the upcoming season, particularly the week-one matchup against the Green Bay Packers, following a leg injury that had sidelined him last year.
Before the game, Hutchinson interacted with fans, signing autographs for those who came out to support the team.
Hall of Fame Inductions
On Saturday, notable new inductees to the Pro Football Hall of Fame will include Eric Allen, Jared Allen, Antonio Gates, and Sterling Sharpe.
