Jets' training camp practice turns into a chaotic situation

Jets Training Camp Scrimmage Recap

The Jets participated in a scrimmage that resembled a real game situation more than others this training camp. Unfortunately, it was marred by awkward moments and frustration from fans.

It was a rough day on the field. They had numerous penalties, which left many in attendance groaning. The team executed full-contact scrimmages, except for the quarterbacks, and it felt, well, a bit chaotic. They racked up 12 penalties, and a lot of those were pre-snap infractions.

These penalties halted several drives, causing disruptions that were hard to ignore.

Coach Aaron Glenn shared his thoughts after practice, acknowledging the need for improvement. He mentioned, “There’s a lot we need to tidy up. Everyone saw those penalties, and that’s something we wanted to focus on. It’s essential to treat these situations like real games, and I think we did a decent job.”

However, he emphasized that these penalties reflect a lack of discipline. “Our players know this. We really need to tighten up; it’s just a matter of being disciplined and trained better in those moments,” he added.

Last year, the Jets topped the league in penalty yards and total penalties. Glenn has been vocal about needing more discipline since camp started, yet it’s crystal clear that translating this message into practice remains a challenge.

“We keep discussing this as a team, trying to pinpoint the reasons behind certain penalties. Some of these holding calls are a bit technical,” Glenn explained. “As coaches, we want to address these problems. I’m not saying it’s okay; I just need to help them with their technique.”

He acknowledged that while there were some positive runs despite the penalties, it’s the penalties that ultimately matter in the long run. “We need to ensure we’re effectively coaching up the team,” he stated.

In terms of performance, quarterback Justin Fields had a tough day, completing only two of ten passes. He contributed to the rhythm issues on the field as well.

Glenn pointed out, “We missed some crucial catches, and he needs to be more consistent with his throws.”

On a brighter note, the running game had its moments of success. Fields scored a touchdown, and running backs Bracehall, Blairon Allen, and Isaiah Davis showed flashes of talent at various points.

Glenn expressed his admiration for the running backs, noting, “I want to be clear; they worked incredibly hard today. They delivered and I expect them to continue to do so.”

However, even with solid performances from the running backs, it can’t mask the surrounding dysfunction. Saturday’s scrimmage felt too familiar in a disappointing way.
