Dr. Mehmet Oz, who heads the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), announced that the Trump administration intends to invest over $200 billion into Medicaid following the passing of a significant piece of legislation.

In an appearance on CBS’s “Face the Nation” on Sunday, Oz remarked, “I am reaching out to them with this wonderful program, this noble effort to support individuals.”

He emphasized the importance of Medicaid fulfilling its mission to care for those it was established for—young kids at the beginning of their lives, seniors nearing the end, and those often overlooked, referencing Hubert Humphrey’s assertion about moral governance.

Oz, the 17th CMS administrator, expressed that the administration seeks to provide “quality benefits” through this Medicaid investment. He noted that efforts are underway to tackle the discrepancies in prescription drug prices between the U.S. and Europe while aiming to reduce costs.

Recently, the Trump administration unveiled a program designed to enable Americans to share personal health data and medical records across various health systems and applications managed by private, technology-oriented firms. This initiative is intended to streamline access to health records and enhance health monitoring.

The CMS is charged with overseeing this system, and officials stressed the necessity for patients to have the option to share their medical data securely.

According to staff, this new system is expected to improve the ease with which patients can access their records, moving away from more cumbersome methods like fax machines that have hindered the process in the past.

“We’re making great strides in how individuals can utilize their records,” Oz stated during a White House event.

The CMS currently holds information on over 140 million Americans enrolled in Medicare and Medicaid. Earlier this month, federal agencies consented to release a large database containing addresses of those set for deportation.
