As more people in the U.S. seek healthier dietary choices, some common food and drink options might be hindering those goals. Nutrition experts have recently highlighted several daily items that could be more harmful than many realize.
These everyday snacks and beverages come under scrutiny as experts encourage consumers to examine their diets more closely.
Hidden dangers of sugar in everyday foods
Here are five items to reconsider.
1. Frozen Meals
While frozen dinners are often seen as convenient, they come with their own set of health risks, according to Alma Simmons, a registered dietitian affiliated with Ohio State University.
She points out that many frozen meals may contain over half the recommended daily sodium limit, potentially leading to increased blood pressure and kidney strain. Plus, they often contain unhealthy fats and various preservatives that could contribute to chronic conditions.
There’s also a concern that heating certain plastics used in packaging can cause harmful chemicals to leach into the food.
Julia Zumpano, another nutritionist from the Cleveland Clinic, echoes this sentiment by stating that frozen meals typically lack essential nutrients. A diet limited to these meals may result in nutritional deficits.
2. Diet Soda
Diet sodas carry their own risks. According to Simmons, they can negatively impact gut health due to artificial sweeteners like aspartame, which may disrupt gut microbiota and insulin sensitivity.
Many might think diet soda is a safe alternative, but Simmons warns that it can be just as harmful as its sugary counterparts. Erosion of tooth enamel can occur even in sugar-free varieties.
Zumpano adds that diet drinks can lead to increased triglycerides, blood sugar levels, and cravings, making weight management even more challenging.
3. Potato Chips
For those snacking on potato chips, Lauren Moneyker, a nutritionist based in South Carolina, highlights that these snacks are often high in sodium and unhealthy fats. Regular consumption can lead to issues like high blood pressure and may encourage overeating.
She suggests considering healthier alternatives such as air-popped popcorn or roasted chickpeas for a more nutritious snack option.
4. Sweet Coffee Drinks
Sweetened coffee drinks, such as flavored lattes, might taste delightful, but they can cause significant health concerns. With high sugar content, these beverages can lead to spikes in blood sugar followed by fatigue.
Moneyker advises that relying on these drinks can lead to energy dips and potential weight gain over time. Instead, she encourages transitioning to unsweetened coffee and saving sugary options for rare treats.
5. Alcohol
Cutting back on alcohol can be particularly challenging for many. Daily drinking might strain the liver and worsen sleep quality, as well as increase risks for chronic health issues including high blood pressure and certain cancers.
Even small amounts can accumulate and cause problems, leading Moneyker to advocate for moderating alcohol consumption throughout the week. Pairing drinks with non-alcoholic options or mocktails can be beneficial.
