New York Governor Critiques Texas Democrats’ District Plans
New York Governor Kathy Hochul expressed her disapproval of recent actions taken by Texas lawmakers, even as they promised to “fight against fire” in their efforts to pass a new district plan backed by Republicans on Monday.
On the same day, Hochul hosted Texas Democrats who had left their state to obstruct the voting process for the proposed rezoning. New York Democrats contended that former President Donald Trump and the Republicans are orchestrating a “legal uprising” aimed at undermining the elections scheduled for 2026. They emphasized that Democrats shouldn’t hesitate to adopt similar tactics if necessary.
Hochul commented, “What Texas and Republican states are doing under Donald Trump’s influence is nothing short of a legal riot directed at our Capitol. Though they’re using lawful proceedings, it doesn’t mean it’s right; it needs to be stopped.” She added, “If Republicans are keen on changing the rules to their advantage, we’re left with no choice but to respond in kind. Everything is fair in love and war, I suppose. So, in collaboration with our leaders, we’re looking into all possible avenues to redraw our state legislature boundaries as quickly as we can.”
New York and Illinois are currently providing refuge to Texas Democrats, effectively preventing the Republicans from achieving the quorum required to push their district plans through.
Texas Governor Greg Abbott has threatened to punish lawmakers who fail to return by Monday afternoon, stating he would initiate arrests or expulsions. In response, a sizable contingent of Texas Democratic representatives made their way to Chicago and New York on Sunday night, successfully stalling the vote. Shortly after Abbott’s announcement, the Texas House Democrat Caucus issued a terse rebuttal, declaring, “Come and take it.”
The proposed Republican district changes, which could secure five additional GOP House seats in the upcoming mid-terms, have been labeled as a “racist medieval constituency change scheme” by the Democrats. In his remarks, Abbott criticized the Democrats’ dramatic exit from Texas, asserting, “Real Texans don’t shy away from a fight.”
There’s more at stake for the lawmakers than just removal; Abbott warned of taking funds to cover potential fines stemming from House rules. He mentioned that violating bribery laws could lead to accusations against anyone offering compensation to avoid legislative duties.
