Conor McGregor Moves Toward Presidential Bid in Ireland
In March, Conor McGregor announced his ambitions to run for the presidency of Ireland. He’s now taking steps to make that intention official.
On Monday, the UFC star shared a link to a petition on social media, stating, “I, Conor McGregor, hereby declare my intentions for the esteemed office of the President of Ireland.” It seems he’s quite serious about this.
McGregor highlighted a significant issue in Ireland’s current political framework, pointing out that existing rules create a hurdle for democratic involvement. Candidates need nominations from either 20 members of the Oireachtas or one of the four county councils in order to qualify for the presidential vote.
He proposed a change in the nomination process through his petition, suggesting that Irish citizens, both at home and abroad, should have a say in determining who can appear on the ballot. He believes this is essential for the Irish people to genuinely shape their future.
Interestingly, McGregor’s preliminary announcement about his presidential run came shortly after a meeting with former President Donald Trump earlier this year. He voiced opposition to a bill concerning the EU’s migration agreement, arguing that Ireland must completely implement the deal by June 12, 2026. He mentioned that various laws need to be passed ahead of that deadline.
Advocating for democracy, McGregor stated, “It’s an Irish choice! Always! This is the true future of Ireland. Every citizen should have a voice in shaping their destiny.” He has also been vocal about raising awareness of issues impacting Irish citizens, even discussing them in the White House.
In September, he hinted that he might be the “only logical choice” for the presidency. It’s been a while since he last fought—his last match was in 2021, marred by a leg injury. He had aimed to return last year, but a toe injury sidelined him. Now, he’s indicated he wants to come back, specifically eyeing a UFC event at the White House next year.
