Electrical Failure Strikes Celebrity Cruise Ship
Travelers aboard a celebrity cruise ship certainly didn’t feel like stars last Saturday. The ship experienced a significant electrical failure that left it temporarily incapacitated.
This mishap occurred on August 2 while the ship was cruising the Ionian Sea, about 25 miles southeast of its intended route, during an 11-night Mediterranean journey. The vessel, equipped with over 2,100 guests and approximately 1,000 crew members, was meant to enjoy a day at sea before arriving in Messina, Sicily.
However, the situation took a turn when the ship lost all power for three hours. This blackout affected lighting, air conditioning, sanitation facilities, and even kitchen equipment. Instead of sailing smoothly at the usual speed of 24 knots, the ship barely crawled at about 1-2 knots during this time.
Interestingly, while the guests faced some discomfort, like the lack of air conditioning at nearly 80°F, crew members still managed to maintain professionalism and communicated effectively with those on board. Cold meals were served as the kitchen was out of commission.
The ship’s emergency generators kicked in, keeping essential systems like emergency lighting and fire detection operational. That seems crucial, right?
A representative from Royal Caribbean Group, the parent company of Celebrity Cruises, acknowledged a “technical problem” as the cause of the power outage but didn’t go into specifics about what happened or how it would be resolved. Meanwhile, the engineering crew collaborated with a coastal support team to restore power.
After roughly two hours, power levels started to recover, although the ship remained stationary for a bit longer before it could gain full speed again.
The cruise began in Ravenna, Italy, on July 28 and is scheduled to conclude at Civitavecchia-Rome on August 8. The vessel is currently heading toward Naples, but it’s unclear if it will reach Messina on schedule.
Power failures at sea are not unheard of. They can arise from electrical issues, engine compartment complexities, or even software glitches. That said, some have drawn comparisons to past incidents, such as the infamous 2013 Carnival Cruise power loss, as depicted in the Netflix docuseries. Yet, thankfully, passengers on this particular cruise were not facing any serious dangers.
