The Spurs Lock in De’Aaron Fox
The San Antonio Spurs have secured point guard De’Aaron Fox with a four-year maximum extension that will keep him with the team through the 2029-30 season.
This move comes after Fox was traded from the Kings, where he made a name for himself as a one-time All-Star and All-NBA selection. Last season, he managed to play 17 games with the Spurs before undergoing finger surgery that sidelined him for the rest of the year.
In those few games, Fox averaged 19.7 points and 6.8 assists. It’s a solid start, especially considering his prior stats with the Kings, where he averaged 25 points, 6.1 assists, and 5.0 rebounds per game. That’s impressive, I think, given the transition he’s made.
Although Fox and superstar Victor Wembanyama only played five games together, reports suggest they’ve built a good rapport. They are set to be the cornerstone of a young team looking to make a mark in the league.
Fox, now 27, is not just a star himself but also leads a young backcourt alongside Stephon Castle and Dylan Harper.
Stephon Castle, a former UConn standout, is showing promise in his rookie season with averages of 14.7 points, 4.1 assists, and 3.7 rebounds. Then there’s Dylan Harper, chosen second in the draft, with impressive averages as well—19.4 points, 4.6 rebounds, and 4.0 assists per game, shooting 48.4% from the field.
The trio of guards—Fox, Castle, and Harper—brings a blend of skills to the team. What stands out is the height difference, with the 6-foot-6 Harper and Castle providing some versatility beside the 6-foot-3 Fox.
As Fox enters his ninth NBA season, he joins the elite company of Luka Doncic as one of only two players who have averaged 20 points, five assists, and a steal across the past six seasons.
