Olympic Medical Center Faces Medicare Contract Termination
Port Angeles – Olympic Medical Center is at risk of losing its Medicare provider contract after concerns were raised about the hospital’s adherence to essential patient care standards.
A letter dated June 30, 2025, from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) indicated that a follow-up survey by the state Department of Health on June 12 revealed the hospital does not currently meet “substantial compliance.” This includes failing to fulfill two critical participation conditions (COPs) needed for Medicare-approved hospitals and nursing services.
As a result of these findings, CMS stated that Olympic Medical Center no longer qualifies for Medicare program participation, leading to the expected termination of its provider agreement on August 15, 2025.
Starting on that date, Medicare will not reimburse the hospital for any services rendered to patients who are admitted after August 15. However, patients who are admitted before this date may receive coverage for inpatient care for up to 30 days.
At present, the CMS website does not feature Olympic Medical Center as being at risk of termination, but it notes that regulations require public disclosure about Medicare terminations prior to their effect.
More than 60% of OMC’s patients rely on Medicare for coverage.
The letters from CMS to OMC officials suggest that the hospital can avert termination by addressing the identified issues and submitting a valid corrective action plan approved by the state health agency. However, the hospital was supposed to provide these plans by July 10, which is now three weeks overdue.
While CMS does not disclose specific information about the mentioned issues, such violations generally relate to patient rights protection or inadequate nursing services.
Newsradio Konp has reached out to OMC officials regarding the future level of service and whether they will be able to address the concerns before the deadline. We are still awaiting a response.
Following the resignation of Darryl Wolfe last week, OMC is now in the process of searching for a new CEO.
