'King of the Hill' revival pays tribute to Jonathan Joss

In Memory of Jonathan Joss

Jonathan Joss, best known as the voice of John Redcorn in “King of the Hill,” is remembered fondly. Tragically, he was shot and killed in San Antonio, Texas, on June 1. On Monday, an on-screen tribute was dedicated to him at the conclusion of the season 14 finale, featuring a heartfelt message: “In loving memories… Jonathan Joss,” accompanied by an image of him alongside his character.

The actor, who was 59 years old, lost his life outside his residence amid a conflict with his neighbor, Sigred Seja Alvarez. Joss was discovered lying “near the road” when authorities responded to the shooting incident and subsequently arrested Alvarez.

Reports suggest that Alvarez admitted to shooting Joss but was released on June 2 after posting a $20 million bail. Meanwhile, those who knew Joss remember him not only for his work on “King of the Hill,” but also for his appearances in shows like “Parks and Recreation” and “Tulsa King.”

Tristan Caan de Gonzalez, Joss’ husband, was with him during the incident and claimed that Joss may have been targeted in a hate crime due to their sexual orientation. He recounted a moment of laughter shared between them, indicating that his husband had faced a homophobic attack.

Initially, the San Antonio Police Department stated there was no evidence suggesting Joss’ murder was linked to his sexuality. However, Police Chief William McManus later admitted that their original assessment was premature, and he expressed regret for the mishap, extending apologies to the LGBTQ+ community for the loss of Joss.

Joss had joined “King of the Hill” in 1996, stepping in after Victor Aaron, the original voice of John Redcorn, passed away. He continued to voice the character until the show’s 13th season in 2009 and was set to reprise his role for an upcoming revival.

Notably, just days before his death, Joss had attempted to engage with co-creators Mike Judge and Greg Daniels at the ATX TV Festival, which may have added an eerie twist to the tragedy that followed.

In remembrance, candles, flowers, and notes have been placed at a makeshift memorial in San Antonio, attesting to the impact Joss had on those who cherished his work and spirit.

Judge and Daniels shared their sorrow on social media, acknowledging Joss’ significant contribution to “King of the Hill,” and expressing that his voice would be profoundly missed.
