Cedric Mullins Adjusts to New Team
Cedric Mullins has just wrapped up his first series wearing a different shade of orange.
The center fielder played his initial games with the Mets over the weekend. He described the rapid transition following his trade from the Orioles as somewhat chaotic.
“Right after the deal, it was a bit of a dash and scramble,” Mullins explained. “But everyone here has been really welcoming and made it easy for me to adjust. I’m just doing my best.”
During the Mets’ 10-10 losses at Citi Field against the Guardians, Mullins went 4-4 with a combination of strikeouts and walks. He mentioned that the support from everyone was crucial in helping him settle in.
This support has been viewed positively by the veterans in the team.
“I think it’s really the beauty of this team and the connections these guys have with each other,” Mullins noted.
It took him until the second game to achieve his first hit, but that’s not his primary focus right now. He’s more concentrated on other aspects of his gameplay where he typically shines.
“It’s about defense, running, and stealing bases,” Mullins said. “We play the right way, which is how I showcase my best.”
These skills are crucial for team success, and Mullins excels in both.
On average, his performance saves about two runs per game for his team.
Additionally, Mullins’ speed on the basepath has been significant, registering 15 stolen bases as of Monday.
Adapting to the expansive center field at Citi Field is still an adjustment for him.
“It’s all about being consistently present,” Mullins explained. “I’ve learned how quickly things can get to you in the outfield.”
While he’s focused on adapting, Mullins has already cherished some moments with his new teammates.
“Pete [Alonso] has already hit 250 home runs. It was pretty awesome to be part of two of those,” Mullins shared.
