Republicans Have a Chance to Win in November by Backing the Budget Bill

Democrats have positioned a significant bill as the centerpiece of their 2026 campaign, leveraging a mix of questionable claims and misinformation. Unsurprisingly, left-leaning media often reflects these narratives, downplaying accurate accounts of the legislation.

It’s crucial for Republican incumbents and candidates to engage in discussions about the OBBB. This legislation is hailed as being highly beneficial for workers, families, and small businesses in America.

Recent polling from a US majority project indicates that as voters learn more, their support for Republican candidates—especially those opposed to Democrat policies—may increase significantly.

Target Voter Group

The strategy identifies two key voter segments.

  • New Majority – Roughly 72% of voters align with core values yet have shown lower support for Republicans. If the GOP captures 70% of this group, it could establish a commanding majority akin to FDR’s New Deal.
  • Non-Converted MAGA – About 11% of voters who previously backed President Trump haven’t made up their minds about voting for Democrats. Winning over 70% of these individuals—while retaining current support—could secure a Republican majority in 2026.

In general voter preference, Democrats lead slightly, with 46% over Republicans at 43%. However, among the new majority, Republicans outpace Democrats, 57% to 28%. Among undecided MAGA voters, Democrats hold a 41% lead, but many remain uncertain.

Support for Republicans surged after voters learned about specific provisions in the OBBB.

Key OBB Regulations

  1. Prevents the Largest Tax Hike in History

The expiration of Trump’s 2017 tax cuts could have resulted in a considerable tax increase for all Americans. The OBBB ensures these tax rates remain permanent, thus avoiding this hike.

When voters are asked to choose between Republicans advocating against this tax increase and Democrats who permitted it, the Republicans’ support increased by 17 points overall, with 18 points among the new majority and 61% of undecided MAGA voters.

Alternative messaging has not seen as much traction.

  • “The Largest Tax Cut in History” – Only increased support by 5 points overall and the same among new majority voters, with 43% among undecided MAGA voters.
  • “Extending the 2017 Trump Tax Cut” – This framing neither gained traction overall nor among new majority voters, and only 35% from undecided MAGA voters supported it.

The challenge lies in how voters perceive tax increases—they are seen as suspensions rather than cuts or extensions. Republicans will need to clarify this point.

  1. Targeted Tax Reductions
The OBBB has removed tips and taxes on overtime and expanded child tax credits, benefiting seniors and incentivizing US manufacturing. Knowledge of these benefits resulted in a 17-point increase in support among all voters and 16 points in the new majority, including 62% among undecided MAGA voters.
  2. Lower Healthcare Costs via Expanded HSAs
The legislation broadens access and tax-free coverage for health savings accounts. Once voters understood this, GOP support rose by 17 points across all voters and 16 points within the new majority, achieving 56% support from undecided MAGA voters.
  3. Vocational Training for Low-Income Americans
Pell Grants are now applicable for training programs at community colleges due to the OBBB. This knowledge boosted support for Republican candidates by 19 points overall, with a 12-point increase within the new majority, including 52% among undecided MAGA voters.
  4. Medicaid Reform and Increased Funding
The OBBB strengthens Medicaid by tightening eligibility checks, advocating for a fair share from the nation, and directing resources toward vulnerable populations. Despite Democratic opposition, Medicaid funding is set to rise by $20 billion by 2036, marking a 31% increase.

When comparing Republicans backing these reforms to Democrats who opposed them, the GOP sees a gain of nine points among all voters, ten points in the new majority, and 48% among undecided MAGA voters.

Earlier data revealed that while evaluating Medicaid spending forecasts before and after the OBBB, 30% of voters felt it “slowed growth” in spending, whereas 35% described the GOP budgets as “reduced.”

Regarding lesser spending due to work requirements, 53% regarded this as “savings” in safety net programs, while just 25% labeled it as “cuts.”

Winning in 2026

As Margaret Thatcher famously noted, “First you win the argument, then you win the vote.” The Republican party can achieve both by communicating facts and challenging Democratic narratives, special interests, and the media.

Democrat strategist Joe Neapolitan warned, “Don’t underestimate the intelligence of the American people or overestimate how much they know.” Understanding the realities of the OBBB could lead voters to align with the GOP and reject Democratic mischaracterizations.

The ongoing budget discussions represent a significant opportunity for Republicans while posing a serious political threat for Democrats.
