Speculation Surrounds Gail King’s Future at CBS Morning

Staff at CBS are debating what the future holds for the well-known morning show anchor, Gail King, especially as the network’s leadership begins to implement changes to her show.

As the liberal co-host of “CBS Mornings,” King has faced challenges in boosting ratings, even with high-profile guests like Oprah Winfrey featured on the program. In July, “CBS Mornings” averaged 1.8 million viewers, significantly behind its competitors, “Good Morning America” with 2.4 million and “Today” at 2.6 million.

“People appreciate her candidness, but it’s not for everyone,” a CBS employee shared about the team’s sentiments regarding King. “Having a big name means she’ll inevitably attract scrutiny.”

Despite the challenges, King is generally well-liked within the network, benefiting from a support system that includes Shawna Thomas, the executive producer of “CBS Mornings.” Colleagues suggested that her position is somewhat secure, although changes are definitely underway.

However, that sense of security may be threatened by a shift in editorial direction led by CBS News president Tom Chibrovsky and vice president Wendy Fisher. They’re reshaping story selections and adjusting the program’s format. “I understand Tom is heavily involved,” staff mentioned. “He aims to highlight stories from less prominent regions—stories that resonate with everyday people.”

The editorial modifications come as Chibrovsky, who previously spent three decades at ABC News, joined CBS News in March. “People I’ve talked to seem really pleased with him,” one staff member remarked about Chibrovsky’s reputation. “He’s trustworthy and well-respected within the organization.”

Many believe that the changes he has enacted are part of his strategy to shape the network and are unrelated to broader corporate decisions or upcoming mergers.

“I think the shifts I’ve noticed focus on growth and viewer engagement rather than reactions to corporate pressures,” said another employee. “He’s only been here since spring, but it’s clear he’s adapting to his new role.”

As “CBS Mornings” transitions back to the CBS Broadcast Center from Times Square, staff are anticipating further editorial changes in the near future.

There have been some discussions about the leadership’s vision for CBS News, including whether King will remain a key player. Speculation suggests Adrianna Diaz could be considered as a potential successor to King, should that need arise. “King is our standout star, but I think everyone is more concerned about stability,” a staff member indicated. “At the end of the day, we want to maintain continuity.”

CBS News did not immediately respond to requests for additional comments.
