Schwarzenegger Opposes Newsom’s Redistricting Push in California

Former California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger is stepping into the political fray again, preparing to challenge current Governor Gavin Newsom’s plans to dismantle the state’s nonpartisan redistricting commission.

Schwarzenegger, notably the last Republican to serve as governor in a state dominated by Democrats, aims to counter what he views as a troubling trend. His spokesperson, Daniel Kechel, mentioned that Schwarzenegger refers to gerrymandering as “the evil” and believes that it is unjust for politicians to manipulate power away from the people.

In a move likely aimed at enhancing his chances for a potential 2028 presidential run, Newsom is looking to modify California’s congressional map, hoping to generate five more Democratic-friendly districts before the upcoming midterm elections.

This initiative comes as a response to Texas Republicans, who are pushing to draw up five additional conservative districts, reportedly at the behest of Donald Trump. Newsom’s actions are seen as an effort to combat the strategic moves of the GOP.

“We’ll fight fire with fire,” Newsom declared, emphasizing that he’s ready to take vigorous action in the battle over state redistricting.

In Texas, the situation has escalated, with Democrats fleeing the state to avoid vote counts that could allow Republicans to push through new district maps. Governor Greg Abbott has threatened to arrest these lawmakers when they return.

Trump recently expressed optimism about Democrats losing seats in Texas due to potential redistricting changes. He mentioned that simply redrawing the lines could secure five additional Republican seats.

Back in California, Schwarzenegger is staunchly opposed to these maneuvers. He defended the state’s nonpartisan approach to redistricting, rejecting the notion that California should emulate Texas’s legislative strategies.

His governance years saw the passage of constitutional amendments aimed at restricting political power over districting, shifting authority to independent committees.

As Newsom moves forward with plans to gain public backing for a special election to overturn the nonpartisan committee amendments, he faces an uphill battle in a Democrat-controlled legislature that requires a two-thirds vote.

Newsom asserted that voters in California would ultimately have the opportunity to speak their minds. “Only if Texas moves forward, we will give Californians the chance to decide for themselves,” he stated.
