MTG asks Trump to shorten George Santos’ long prison sentence

George Santos’ Sentence Sparks Controversy

GOP Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene is advocating for President Donald Trump to consider commuting the lengthy sentence handed to former NYC Congressman George Santos. Santos is currently serving over seven years in prison following his conviction last month.

Greene, a prominent figure in the Republican party, disclosed that she has sent a letter to the Department of Justice. In it, she implores the President to take action regarding Santos’ harsh sentencing.

Santos faced numerous charges—23 in total—that include serious allegations like wire fraud, money laundering, and making false statements to the Federal Election Commission, along with identity theft.

Back in August 2024, Santos pled guilty to one count of wire fraud and one count of aggravated identity theft, resulting in an 87-month prison term.

“I just sent a letter urging President Trump to commute the sentence for [George Santos]. The seven-year sentence related to campaign charges seems excessively harsh, especially when other Congress members who’ve committed worse offenses remain free,” Greene shared on X-Post.

In her letter to the DOJ, Greene expressed, “As a fellow Congressman, I have collaborated with Mr. Santos on various issues and understand my obligation to serve the New Yorkers who elected him.”

“He genuinely regrets his actions and fully accepts responsibility. My office has spoken with his team, and we all agree that the sentence is a significant injustice,” Greene’s letter stated.

Santos had a brief Congressional tenure of 11 months, during which he mismanaged campaign funds, forged financial documents, and misrepresented parts of his background.

When questioned about the possibility of a pardon for Santos last Friday, Trump didn’t completely dismiss the idea but noted that “no one spoke to me” regarding it.

“He lied tremendously,” Trump commented, adding, “I didn’t know him well, but he was fully supportive of Trump.”

Santos, a Trump supporter, has aligned himself with the former President, asserting his belief that the 2020 election was stolen and even traveled to Washington, D.C. on January 5, 2021.

Since entering a federal prison in New Jersey on July 25, Santos has continued to express resilience, writing in two columns that he hasn’t lost hope.

“This chapter of my life is difficult and harsh, but it’s just one part of my story. The best is yet to come,” Santos remarked.

He has often claimed to be a victim of a political “witch hunt,” while also criticizing the judge’s decision as politically motivated.
