Mets made a significant move for Byron Buxton at the trade deadline

The Mets made a move to strengthen their center field by acquiring Cedric Mullins right at the trade deadline, but they initially looked at bigger options.

They reached out to Byron Buxton’s agent, BB Abbott, to explore whether the star outfielder would consider waiving his no-trade clause to be traded from the Twins. As reported, Buxton and Abbott were reportedly leaning towards staying in Minnesota during July.

In a recent press conference in Atlanta, Buxton expressed, “It’s always good to hope for. Don’t get me wrong, but the only place I want is Minnesota. All my choices are simple. I’m not a place in my mind. It’s what happens.”

At 31, Buxton is having one of his best seasons, boasting a .282/.343/.561 hitting line along with 23 home runs and 17 stolen bases, coupled with excellent defensive skills in center field. He’s spent his entire Major League career with the Twins after being drafted first overall in 2012.

Buxton was seen as a potential trade target before the Twins clarified their stance on his no-trade clause in mid-July. The Mets and Braves reportedly showed significant interest, with at least six teams inquiring about him.

Ultimately, the Mets decided to go with Mullins instead, enhancing their bullpen by trading for Tyler Rogers, Ryan Healthley, and Gregory Soto.

Meanwhile, the Twins were particularly active at the deadline, trading away ten major league players in seven different deals, which included sending Carlos Correa back to Houston.
