U.S. Visa Policy Update on Transgender Women in Sports
In a recent directive influenced by President Donald Trump, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is revising its visa policy to prevent biological males from participating in women’s sports events. The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Administration announced this change on Monday, stating that transgender women will not be eligible for temporary work visas intended for competitors in women’s sports, which also affects visas related to “extraordinary talent” across various fields including arts and athletics.
“Men do not belong in women’s sports,” stated USCIS spokesman Matthew Tragesser in a press release. He emphasized that this policy aims to close loopholes for foreign male athletes who might try to change their gender identity to gain an unfair advantage. He argued that this poses a risk to the integrity of women’s sports.
Tragesser elaborated that it is essential for safety and fairness that only biological female athletes receive visas to compete in the U.S. for women’s sports. The new policy also considers any previous participation of biological males against female competitors as a negative factor during visa evaluations.
If male athletes, previously recognized in male sports, seek to transition and compete among women in the U.S., USCIS views this attempt as inconsistent with their demonstrated abilities. This decision aligns with the broader directive issued by Trump to exclude men from female sports competitions.
Shortly after signing the executive order, Trump indicated plans to review cases of individuals claiming a female identity to compete in women’s sports, suggesting potential fraud investigations. “If you come to the country claiming to be a woman, yet you attempt to compete with women, we’ll look closely into it,” reports claim.
During the signing earlier this year, Trump asserted that his administration would not permit biological males to compete in women’s events at the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles. His stance appeared resolute as he proclaimed, “We’re not going to let that happen.”
