Former Miami Heat Security Guard Charged with Selling Stolen Memorabilia
The U.S. Lawyer’s Office in Florida announced that a former security guard for the Miami Heat is facing charges for allegedly selling stolen jerseys and memorabilia valued at up to $2 million.
Marcos Thomas Perez, 62, from Miami, is charged with transporting and transferring stolen property across state lines.
Perez, who spent 25 years with the Miami Police Department, worked as a security guard for the Miami Heat from 2016 to 2021, and later in an NBA security role until 2025, as reported by the Department of Justice.
He had access to a secure equipment room that contained hundreds of jerseys and memorabilia meant for display at the planned Miami Heat Museum.
Reports suggest that Perez visited the facility multiple times to take jerseys and other items from over 400 games. Notably, he reportedly sold a Miami Heat jersey worn by LeBron James during the NBA Finals for about $100,000, which later fetched $3.7 million at Sotheby’s Auction.
Law enforcement officials executed a search warrant at Perez’s home on April 3, where they recovered around 300 stolen game jerseys and other valuable memorabilia, confirming these items had been stolen from the facility.
Perez sold the items to an online broker, and over three years, he allegedly sold more than 100 stolen items for approximately $2 million, often at discounted prices.
