Seattle Mayoral Race Heats Up

Longtime progressive activist Katie Wilson is set to challenge incumbent mayor Bruce Harrell in the upcoming November general election. This follows their strong performances in Tuesday’s nonpartisan mayoral primary.

Reports indicate that Wilson garnered about 46% of the votes, just ahead of Harrell, who received around 45% according to various sources.

Wilson is recognized for her efforts in establishing a left-leaning transit rider union. She’s also expressed intentions to guide Seattle in a direction that some believe parallels the actions of Zoran Mamdani in New York City.

Harrell, who spent over a decade on the Seattle City Council before becoming mayor in 2021, is seen as a key player in this race.

Both candidates have amassed significantly larger campaign funds compared to the other seven who participated in the primary.

Records from Seattle’s ethics and election offices show that while Harrell, backed by nearly all current elected officials, raised just over $500,000 prior to the primary, Wilson’s fundraising totaled about $475,000.

Heading into the general election, Wilson aims to prevent Harrell from becoming the city’s first mayor re-elected in 20 years.

Wilson has criticized Harrell for his approach to homelessness, suggesting he focuses too much on clearing encampments instead of creating more shelter options. She accuses him of being part of the existing political system.

In response, Harrell defends his record, stating, “My administration has put over $1 billion into affordable housing.” He emphasizes this as part of his commitment to the city.

Harrell also highlights the broad coalition supporting his campaign, including over 100 current and former officials as well as labor and community leaders.

The general election, where Wilson and Harrell will confront each other, is scheduled for Tuesday, November 4th.
