GOP Representatives Burchett and Ogles consider running for Senate as Blackburn aims for governor.

GOP Representatives Burchett and Ogles consider running for Senate as Blackburn aims for governor.

Senator Marsha Blackburn’s (R-Ten) bid for governor has sparked interest in the Senate seat, especially if Tim Burchette (R-Ten) and Andy Ogles (R-Ten) secure new positions. Burchette has confirmed to The Hill that he would be interested in a Senate seat should Blackburn be elected governor. This interest was first reported by CNN.

Ogles has also expressed his enthusiasm for the Senate seat, stating, “I’m definitely interested in it. I’ve expressed my interest,” when speaking to The Hill. He even made a light-hearted comment about competing with Burchette.

The race for Blackburn’s Senate seat became a talking point shortly after she announced her candidacy for governor on Wednesday.

According to Tennessee law, if a Senate vacancy arises, a successor must be elected in the next November election to complete the term. However, if the vacancy occurs at a time when representation is crucial, the governor can appoint a successor until a special election is held.

This means that if Blackburn wins the gubernatorial election in 2026, she could appoint her own successor, even though she was just elected to a six-year Senate term in 2024.

Although Burchett hasn’t discussed his interest with Blackburn directly, he mentioned their long-standing friendship. “We were sitting next to each other; she was literally on my right, and I was on her left. We’ve built a great friendship,” he shared.

However, the timeline for this situation depends on when Blackburn might resign from her Senate position if she wins the Republican primary for governor on August 6, 2026. Should she step down before taking office as governor, the current Republican Governor, Bill Lee, would have the authority to appoint a temporary replacement.

As of now, Blackburn hasn’t secured any nominations, facing competition from Rep. John Rose (R-Tenn), who announced his own bid for the governorship in March.

Tennessee is a stronghold for Republicans, with Trump winning by nearly 40 points in 2024. If Blackburn vacates her Senate seat, it’s likely that both the upcoming governor and senator will be from the Republican party.
