Trump Considers Federal Control to Tackle DC Violence

Former President Donald Trump recently suggested that he might take charge of policing in Washington, D.C., amid growing concerns over rising crime and violence. He emphasized the need for stronger measures to restore safety in the capital, especially after a disturbing gang-related assault on a former Doge worker known as Edward “Big Ball” Coristine.

During a briefing with the press, Trump remarked, “Yeah, crime is ridiculous, so I’m thinking about it.” He went on to mention that comparisons between crime rates in D.C. and other areas were revealing, albeit disheartening. Trump noted, “We want a great, safe capital. And we have it. It includes cleanliness and other things. But right now, it’s very unsafe.” His comments underline the urgency he feels regarding the situation.

The recent violent attack on Coristine, a teenager identified as a target of gang violence, prompted Trump to reach out personally. He described the incident as potentially life-threatening, stating, “We almost lost a young man.” He promised to keep in touch with Coristine and expressed his commitment to addressing the escalating violence. Trump stated, “He went through a bad situation, and there’s too much. We’re going to do something about it.”

When questioned about an earlier law that grants D.C. significant autonomy, Trump hinted that legal reviews were already underway. He remarked, “We’re trying to see it. In fact, lawyers are already studying it.” It seems that federal intervention might be on the table should the crime situation not improve.

Trump illustrated his vision for a safer D.C. by discussing plans to potentially reinstate the National Guard to assist with law enforcement. He declared, “What an embarrassing situation. We wouldn’t allow it. Crime, robbery, murder rates—it’s unacceptable. We’re going to make the city beautiful.” His statements reflected a desire for significant changes, although some thoughts felt somewhat unfinished, revealing a complexity in his approach.
