Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton has initiated an inquiry into a former political group led by Beto O’Rourke, examining whether it unlawfully “funded” a Democrat’s trip to thwart the newly proposed Republican legislative map.
In a press release, Paxton stated that Powered by People, O’Rourke’s group, might be breaching the Bribery Act. He suggested that Texas Democrats who left both O’Rourke’s group and the state could have violated other Texas laws related to campaign contributions and spending, among other issues.
Paxton expressed on social media that he is opening an investigation into what he characterized as a radical group attempting to illegally support Democrats who are absent.
“Any Democrat involved in accepting what I term ‘beto’s bribes’ will be held accountable,” he added.
A report indicated that Powered by People was one of the leading contributors to covering expenses for Texas legislators who exited the state.
In response, O’Rourke encouraged supporters to sign up for updates from his organization, saying, “The person accused of bribery is now pursuing individuals attempting to protect five parliamentary seats. I urge everyone to text the number provided to join the fight against these thugs trying to undermine our country.”
Paxton’s investigation includes a request for “documents and communications” related to possible illegal activities linked to the Democrats’ efforts to break quorum.
The press announcement emphasized that Paxton intends to pursue legal action against absent Democrats who fail to comply with a deadline given by the speaker.
In light of the Democrats’ departure on Sunday, several Republicans have called for FBI involvement to prevent the passing of the new GOP map that proposes five additional seats. Trump mentioned the need for FBI action during a recent statement.
Texas Governor Greg Abbott supports Paxton’s efforts to apprehend the absent lawmakers and has begun the process of addressing at least one Democrat currently in office.
