Glenn Kessler Leaves The Washington Post Amidst Cake Celebrations
The Washington Post’s noted fact checker, Glenn Kessler, recently announced his departure, with his final day being July 31st. In a conversation with Fox News Digital, Kessler described his last day as quite hectic, primarily due to the traditional office cakes.
“It was a sugar overload,” Kessler remarked, explaining that the newspaper often holds celebrations featuring cakes for departing staff. A farewell event was organized for him, with colleagues sharing heartfelt messages. Interestingly, some attendees even joined via Zoom from as far away as Asia, connecting despite the time difference.
Kessler reflected on the day, noting, “There were just cakes everywhere.” He humorously mentioned that as he made his way to his celebration, several meeting rooms were already filled with leftover cake from previous events.
He couldn’t help but chuckle at the idea of how much business the bakery in Washington, DC must be getting. “Caking is such a newspaper cliché,” he noted, likening the situation to the film *Spotlight*, where cakes play a role in the humor around journalism.
As Kessler shared his experiences, he revealed that his departure coincided with a broader trend at The Washington Post, which has seen numerous senior staff exits recently. The paper, facing financial challenges, implemented a voluntary separation program, and while some left for new opportunities, others departed out of frustration with management decisions.
Amid these changes, the departure of several key editors, including Matea Gold to the New York Times and Philip Rucker to CNN, has further impacted the newsroom’s morale. Kessler emphasized the significance of these exits, stating they were potentially future leaders of the publication.
In light of these transitions, a spokesman for The Washington Post chose not to comment on the situation. The atmosphere at the paper clearly reflects a turbulent time, as many worry about the loss of talent and vision within its ranks.
