Who is Anita Dunn? The veteran Democratic strategist being questioned by a House committee in the Biden autopen investigation

Anita Dunn Appears Before House Oversight Committee

Anita Dunn, a significant former aide in the Biden administration, recently testified before the House Oversight Committee. The focus of the investigation is to determine if Joe Biden’s close advisors concealed evidence of his mental decline and whether decisions were made without his full awareness, possibly using an autopen.

Known for her long history in Democratic politics, Dunn has been involved in communications for various left-leaning causes. She first joined Biden’s team back in the late 1980s, when she worked as the communications director for the Democratic Senate Election Committee.

Dunn played a crucial role in shaping communications policy during Biden’s presidency and has been pivotal in strategizing for the 2024 reelection campaign. Her husband, Robert Bauer, is also a prominent figure within Biden’s circle.

Despite her close relationship with Biden, there were reportedly tensions among the inner circle, especially towards the latter part of Biden’s term. For instance, in July 2024, Biden’s family considered the possibility of letting Dunn and Bauer go amid tensions linked to the ongoing issues surrounding former President Donald Trump. White House Chief of Staff Jeff Zients dismissed these rumors, branding them as “baseless and insulting.”

Dunn has been vocal regarding her opinions on various matters, including her relationship with Hunter Biden, the president’s only surviving son. She expressed criticism about Biden’s handling of Hunter’s pardon, stating her disagreement with the timing and reasoning, calling it an “attack on the judicial system.”

While she supported the concept of pardons, Dunn expressed reservations about how they were being approached, citing how complicated the context could become. During a recent interview, she reflected on the dynamics at play, noting that while there was assistance for Biden, the “bullying” from the media wasn’t representative of voter sentiments.

Dunn, who has previously served as a crucial ally of Barack Obama, took on significant roles during Obama’s campaigns and in the White House, underscoring her influential presence in Democratic politics.

After her time in Biden’s 2020 campaign and the ensuing administration, Dunn stepped into a consulting role at SKDK and took part in Kamala Harris’ 2024 campaign.

Though criticisms and disagreements have arisen during her time in politics, Dunn continues to be a prominent figure in shaping communication strategy within the Democratic party.
