Don Van Natta Jr. criticizes Dan Patrick over worries about the NFL agreement

The NFL has taken a 10% stake in ESPN, sparking concerns about potential conflicts of interest, but veteran journalist Don Van Natta Jr. remains unfazed. He recently engaged in a discussion with Dan Patrick, a former “SportsCenter” host, who was skeptical about whether ESPN would cover negative stories related to the NFL.

Van Natta pointed out, “Dan, [ESPN reporter Kalyn Kahler] and I reported exclusively on the NFLPA story that ultimately led to Lloyd Howell’s resignation, covering various sensitive topics.” He shared this sentiment on social media, emphasizing the importance of thorough research before making accusations against former colleagues.

“Do your homework before you make your former co-host look bad. Honestly, I’m kind of embarrassed for you,” Van Natta added.

Together, he and Kahler contributed to nine reports regarding the NFLPA scandal and Howell’s departure.

During a recent episode of “The Dan Patrick Show,” Patrick voiced doubts about ESPN’s journalistic integrity in light of the NFL’s investment. “My journalists will highlight any conflicts of interest, but with ESPN so closely aligned with the NFL, are they going to publish critical stories? It seems unlikely,” he remarked. He also mentioned uncertainty about ESPN’s involvement in the NFL Players Association’s troubles.

In turn, Van Natta criticized Patrick’s comments, stating, “Imagine saying ‘the journalist inside me’ and then failing basic journalism.” When someone pointed out that Van Natta’s focus was on the NFLPA rather than the league itself, he acknowledged the nuance.

A two-time Pulitzer Prize recipient, Van Natta joined ESPN in 2012 after nearly two decades as a correspondent for the New York Times.

In exchange for the equity stake in ESPN, the NFL is trading certain media assets it owns, including the NFL Red Zone and NFL Fantasy, as announced by the league.
