Suspect in DC Jewish museum shooting charged with federal hate crimes

U.S. attorneys from the District of Columbia have announced that the Department of Justice is contemplating pursuing the death penalty for Elias Rodriguez. He faces multiple charges in connection with the deaths of Jaron Lisinski and Sarah Milgrim.

Rodriguez has already been charged with the murder of a foreign official and using a firearm in a violent crime. Additionally, he is facing two counts of first-degree murder under Washington, D.C.’s criminal statutes.

The DOJ indicated that the various charges could lead to a death sentence or life imprisonment. Ultimately, it is up to Attorney General Pam Bondy to determine whether to seek the death penalty in this case.

In a press conference, an official noted that Rodriguez’s actions against Milgrim were particularly brutal, although specific details were withheld to preserve the integrity of the upcoming trial. Notably, Milgrim was highlighted as being especially vulnerable due to her condition.

There seems to be a recognition from Bondy’s office that the indictment emphasizes the administration’s stance against anti-Israel hate speech, which has been linked to increasing violence against Jewish and Christian communities.

According to court documents, video evidence reportedly shows Milgrim attempting to escape from Rodriguez after being shot multiple times. It’s mentioned that he reloaded his weapon while she sat on the ground.

Rodriguez allegedly shot Lisinski and Milgrim outside the Capital Jewish Museum, where they were attending an event organized by the American Jewish Commission. Following the shooting, he is accused of entering the museum, displaying a Palestinian scarf, and declaring he acted in support of Palestine.
