Mahmoud Khalil criticized for trying to explain the October 7 attack in an interview: 'He despises America'

Campus Leader Criticized for Supporting Hamas

On Thursday, Mahmoud Khalil faced intense backlash for his attempts to explain the Hamas attacks on Israel from October 7, 2023.

Officials from New York and across the country condemned Khalil’s statements, seen as sympathetic to Hamas, which resulted in over 1,200 deaths and 251 hostages taken in Gaza.

“Mahmoud Khalil should be deported immediately,” stated Rep. Elise Stefanik, representing upstate New York.

Khalil, a green card holder, has long been criticized by Republican lawmakers for his involvement in hostile anti-Israel demonstrations at Columbia University.

“He serves as a prominent agitator for Hamas, fostering a hostile atmosphere at Columbia, where Jewish students have been harassed and attacked,” Stefanik added.

Born to Palestinian parents in a Syrian refugee camp, Khalil became a permanent resident in the U.S. He was released from federal custody by a New Jersey judge in June.

“Naturalized citizenship is a privilege, and he hasn’t earned it. The government should act swiftly to remove this enemy from our shores,” commented Brooklyn MP Kalman Eager in an interview.

In a recent podcast with New York Times journalist Ezra Klein, Khalil referred to the events of October 7 as a desperate moment for Palestinians who felt unheard.

“It’s distressing to see the Palestinian struggle reach such a point,” Khalil expressed when discussing the ongoing hostages in Gaza.

He noted that the attack was, in his view, an attempt to break a cycle of being ignored by Israel, asserting that it conveyed the message that Palestinians are part of the dialogue.

The White House dismissed Khalil’s remarks, calling them yet another example of his efforts to downplay Hamas’ violent acts.

“Khalil showed no shame in supporting Hamas, a group that commits brutal attacks against innocent civilians,” said White House spokeswoman Abigail Jackson.

“No matter how he tries to rationalize the horrific assaults on October 7, there can be no justification,” she emphasized.

The Department of Homeland Security also weighed in, criticizing Khalil’s refusal to denounce Hamas during the interview.

“His failure to condemn Hamas indicates he is a sympathizer. It’s a privilege to be in this country, and actions like his warrant reconsideration of that privilege,” stated DHS spokesperson Tricia McLaughlin.

Khalil was arrested in a Columbia University apartment in March due to his participation in anti-Israel protests. He was a key figure in a student group that has expressed support for terrorist organizations like Hamas and Hezbollah.

After his arrest, Khalil described it as an “abduction,” and he wrote a provocative piece in the Columbia Daily Spectator, criticizing Jewish students’ concerns about anti-Semitism.

White House sources indicated that Secretary of State Marco Rubio was informed of Khalil’s activities earlier this year.

Rep. Ali Brown from Nassau County expressed strong disapproval of Khalil’s comments, calling the characterization of the civilian casualties as a “desperate attempt” deeply troubling.

“He has praised one of the deadliest massacres of Jews since the Holocaust,” Brown stated.

Recently, the Third Circuit Court of Appeals made two decisions regarding the Trump administration’s attempts to deport Khalil.

Initially, the court denied efforts to revisit a bail decision that had been made in Khalil’s favor. Additionally, they rejected the government’s position that his First Amendment rights protected him from deportation.

Baher Azmy, Khalil’s legal representative, argued that the interpretation of his remarks was taken out of context. He asserted that Khalil opposes civilian casualties and emphasizes the importance of human rights.

“He is passionate about stopping the violence and addressing the humanitarian needs of civilians in Gaza,” Azmy concluded.
