Trump and Putin Prepare for Meeting on Ukraine Conflict

Russian President Vladimir Putin and former President Donald Trump are reportedly making arrangements for an upcoming meeting aimed at exploring potential resolutions to the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine.

This high-level discussion is expected to focus on diplomatic strategies to ease tensions, consider ceasefire agreements, and discuss frameworks for a lasting peace. Both leaders seem motivated to encourage dialogue; however, the complex geopolitical landscape and differing interests have made consensus challenging in the past. The results of their talks could significantly influence both regional stability and broader international relations.

Critics of Putin often argue that meetings with him are not productive, claiming he tends to appear agreeable but ultimately neglects his commitments. Interestingly, Trump has previously mirrored this sentiment.

Earlier this year in April, Trump expressed his dissatisfaction, suggesting that Putin might be “stringing him along,” indicating that the Russian president might be pretending to cooperate without genuine follow-through.

“I’m not happy with him, I can tell you that much right now. This is killing a lot of people,” Trump stated, reflecting his frustration over Putin’s ongoing aggression despite their discussions.

While the location for the Trump-Putin meeting has been chosen, it has not been shared with the media yet.

Kremlin foreign policy aide Yuri Ushakov informed reporters that they are “starting to work on specific issues” related to the meeting.

These plans come at a time when Trump is threatening secondary tariffs on Russian oil buyers, aiming to pressure Putin into agreeing to a truce by Friday, which would hopefully terminate the four-year conflict.

A White House official recently mentioned that the U.S. would not meet with Putin without a commitment from him—specifically regarding Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. On Thursday, Putin indicated he was open to a meeting with Zelensky.

However, when asked during an Oval Office session, Trump decisively denied that Zelensky’s presence was a requirement for his own meeting with Putin, simply stating “no.”

“They would like to meet with me, and I’ll do whatever I can to stop the killing,” Trump said.

Despite this, Zelensky is keen on directly engaging with Putin, having discussed multiple negotiation formats during a recent phone call with Trump and European partners, as he mentioned in a post on X.

“I’m grateful to President Trump for his openness to seeking truly effective solutions,” Zelensky noted. “Here in Ukraine, we are confident that this war can be ended with a lasting peace. But every step must be carefully considered to hit the mark.”

“Ukraine is not afraid of meetings and expects the same brave approach from the Russian side,” he added.
