Baker Mayfield Shows Competitive Spirit Ahead of Season
Baker Mayfield is gearing up to lead his team even before the official season kicks off.
The Buccaneers faced off against the Titans in a joint practice on Thursday, and things escalated quickly as Tampa Bay’s starting offense clashed with the Titans’ defense.
During the scrimmage, running back Irving was taken down hard, igniting some tensions on the field.
In the heat of the moment, Mayfield expressed his pride in his teammates, referring to the scuffle as “fun.” He commented, “It’s going to happen and our group won’t back down. We’ll stand up for each other; it’s just part of the game.” He added that while they aren’t reckless, they also won’t shy away from confrontation.
However, not all exchanges pleased Mayfield. Offensive tackle Tristan Wirfs, who is recovering from knee surgery, was seen stepping into the fray despite using crutches. “He really needs to take it easy with those crutches,” Mayfield remarked about Wirfs’ involvement in the altercation.
Fighting during joint practices isn’t unusual, especially as multiple scuffles have erupted in recent days at various NFL training camps. Notably, the Colts and Ravens had a showdown, and there was also a brawl involving the Patriots and Commanders that left New England’s head coach, Mike Vrabel, with a cut on his cheek.
The Buccaneers and Titans are set to meet on the field again when they launch their preseason at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa Bay on Saturday. Each team has distinct goals for the upcoming season.
The Buccaneers aim to build on their 2024 success and seek another playoff appearance, while the Titans, who had the worst record in the NFL last year, are hopeful that rookie Camward can help turn their fortunes around.
