Long Island Ducks Celebrate 1,000th Home Win
The Long Island Ducks have celebrated a significant achievement, reaching their 1,000th home victory after 25 years in the Atlantic League. The milestone was marked on Monday night, highlighted by infielder Ed Johnson’s two walk-off singles that helped secure a thrilling 5-4 win against the Staten Island Ferry Hawks.
The excitement in Islip was palpable as fans erupted in joy; interestingly, it seems the team wasn’t fully aware of the milestone until after the game. Ducks manager Lew Ford admitted, “To be honest, I didn’t know it was 1,000 times until just after the game,” which brought a chuckle from him.
While the Clubhouse may have lagged in acknowledging the achievement, there was certainly enthusiasm among the players. “They were excited about it,” Ford noted, adding, “We play good baseball, but I think it builds a victory for every home.” Currently, the Ducks hold first place and are eager to maintain this momentum as they face crucial games in August.
Ford expressed gratitude towards the “best fans in the league,” highlighting how crucial their support has been. With a home record of 1,000 wins against 726 losses, the team’s .579 win rate is notable. He remarked, “You have no choice but to feed your energy. They’re incredibly motivated,” emphasizing how fan engagement keeps players energized and the atmosphere lively.
Ford went on to explain how home crowds can greatly influence game outcomes. “When you’re playing on the road, that’s difficult. The crowds of people at home make you feel comfortable. We get a very good crowd at home… They make a difference to a lot of games.”
