Lions establish new guideline to address Aidan Hutchinson's impact

Aidan Hutchinson is making quite an impression at Lions practice, perhaps even too much of one.

Reports from Lions camp indicate that Hutchinson has been so dominant that coach Dan Campbell has had to introduce “hatch rules” to keep things balanced during drills.

According to the observations, when Hutchinson engages with a teammate off the line, rather than stopping the play, Campbell lets it run, believing it’s crucial for the team’s development.

“If a player can’t block Hutchinson and I keep blowing the whistle, that doesn’t help us,” Campbell noted on Wednesday.

Without these rules, Campbell thinks the offense wouldn’t see enough practice opportunities.

While it might hinder the offense’s development in camp, Hutchinson’s effectiveness is undoubtedly a positive for the Lions.

Last season, during his third year, Hutchinson led the NFL with 6.5 sacks before suffering a leg injury that cut his campaign short. Even so, he finished the season with 7.5 sacks in just five games.

In those games, he also recorded 40 quarterback pressures, ranking second in the league at that point—an impressive feat.

If Hutchinson returns to his previous form, the Lions’ defense may significantly improve, especially after giving up 45 points in playoff losses last season.

By the end of the season, he was recognized as one of the league’s top defensive players. If the implementation of hatch rules is any indication of his recovery, he could be back among the elite.

The Lions are set to face the division rival Packers in their season opener on September 7th.
