Walker Hayes Reflects on Overcoming Alcoholism
Country singer Walker Hayes has been candid about some challenging moments in his life, including his journey of stepping away from alcohol.
In recent interviews, he shared personal stories, including the tragedy of losing his daughter Oakley during childbirth in June 2018. He recalled a moment when he considered going to a bar called 55 South but had a sudden realization that he didn’t bring his wallet. Thinking back, he noted, “That’s not zero,” hinting at the weight of that moment in his life.
When he returned home that day, he spotted his wife Rainey sitting alone, mourning the loss of their daughter. “I could see what I was trying to avoid,” he admitted. It dawned on him how his struggles could affect not just him, but also Rainey, especially in the context of their family’s grief.
Hayes’ daughter, Oakley, died due to a uterine rupture. The couple has six other children: Beckett, Baylor, Chapel, Everly, Roxley, and Lera.
The singer has been open about his battle with alcoholism and often weaves these experiences into his music. In 2024, he released an album titled “Sober Thoughts” and discussed his decision to quit drinking on various platforms. He described a pivotal moment when he woke up and recognized that continuing his drinking habits could harm his health significantly.
“I just felt that if I kept going, I might die,” he shared honestly. He emphasized the joy he finds in writing about his journey to sobriety, expressing gratitude for how far he’s come.
In discussing the impact of alcohol and its grip on his life, he noted how difficult it can be to attain clarity after being dependent for so long, but he’s relieved to finally embrace a healthier lifestyle.
