Indiana Fever announced on Friday that two of their rotation players will be out for the remainder of the season. Sidney Colson, who suffered a torn left ACL, and Ahly MacDonald, with a broken right foot, will both be sidelined. This leaves the team without a fully healthy point guard, as Caitlyn Clark is also dealing with groin tension, a condition she described last month.
Colson, who joined the team this winter, played around 13.5 minutes off the bench during the first quarter of Thursday’s loss to the Orlando Magic. At 36, she was nearing the twilight of her WNBA career but had become an essential rotation player, particularly while Clark was out.
On the other hand, MacDonald joined the Fever mid-season and has been contributing an average of 9.8 points and 4.7 assists since her arrival. She’s had a few standout performances since signing in June.
With Caitlyn Clark still unable to play due to her groin issue, the Fever’s roster has dwindled to just nine players, as both of their guards are out for the season. This situation poses a challenge for the team, especially since they won’t be able to sign a hardship contract until after their game against the Chicago Sky on Saturday.
Fever Attempts to Sign Two Free Agent Guards
The Fever will actively seek to sign two available guards, but the choices are somewhat limited. After the WNBA trade deadline on August 7, they can’t make any trades—this was evident just hours after losing Colson and McDonald. Consequently, free agency has become their only option, making their selections crucial.
One intriguing possibility is Odyssey Sims, who averaged 9.8 points and 3.5 assists with the Los Angeles Sparks before her release last month. Sims, a veteran in the league, averaged 12.6 points and 5.2 assists last season, with an impressive shooting percentage.
Another potential option is Chenedy Carter, who, although she hasn’t played in the WNBA this season, averaged 17.5 points for the Chicago Sky.
Currently, Fever has a record of 17-14, which places them fifth in the WNBA. If the playoffs started today, they would be set to face the Phoenix Mercury in the first round.
