Los Angeles Mayor Responds to Trump’s Criticism
In a recent interview on “Issue IS,” Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass addressed President Donald Trump’s comments regarding a permit issue, stating, “there’s no clue as to what he’s talking about,” yet acknowledged the concerns raised. She emphasized that they are actively tackling these issues at every stage.
Host Elex Michelson pointed out that many people feel frustrated due to the slow progress, especially after airing a clip of Trump’s remarks about Bass. In response, she noted, “After a few moments, I think we said we haven’t turned on the spigot for the water.” Michelson then mentioned, “There were some permit issues,” to which Bass affirmed the existence of these challenges.
Bass explained that they’ve been ahead of schedule compared to other wildfire responses in California, although she didn’t finish her thought. Michelson later credited the Trump administration’s Army Corps of Engineers for some progress, and Bass acknowledged that she has highlighted this on several occasions.
“We have issued over 300 permits, and many more are in process,” Bass stated. She pointed out the complexities of the permitting process and how they encounter various obstacles along the way.
Michelson added that these issues were not directly related to the Palisade fire but recognized problems with water in Los Angeles. He also mentioned discussions around the use of AI in the permitting process.
Bass replied, “It’s not making a difference yet because it’s not ready for prime time; however, it’s in development.” She indicated that AI needs training to effectively manage the expected influx of permit requests. The process is ongoing, and she highlighted that they have a lot to prepare for regarding future demands.
