Mariano Rivera injures his leg at the Yankees' Old-Timers' Day event.

Mariano Rivera was set to celebrate Old Timers Day and share some moments and advice with struggling Yankees reliever Devin Williams.

Unfortunately, he didn’t get the chance to connect with Williams due to a concerning leg injury.

During a graduate match, Rivera sustained a leg issue, as confirmed by the Yankees after their 5-4 win against the Bronx Astros. The specifics of the injury and its timing remain unclear; he had only run one base and participated in a brief exhibition.

Rivera has a history of unusual practice-related injuries. Back in May 2012, he injured his ACL while catching a fly ball before a game, which led to him missing the entire season.

This recent injury put a damper on Rivera’s plans to chat with Williams. Prior to the events, he mentioned wanting to keep his exact message to himself.

Despite being a Hall of Fame closer and known as one of the best in the game, Rivera acknowledged that even with his impressive 19-season career, he faced his share of challenges.

“Forget that,” Rivera commented on dealing with tough moments, like blowing saves. “You can’t worry about it. Stay confident in yourself.” It’s a simple message, but important—if you’re lacking confidence, what are you really doing in sports?

Williams recently voiced that his confidence isn’t at its peak. As a two-time All-Star for the Brewers, he’s known for being a key player but currently holds a 5.73 ERA after struggling in his last five outings.

“Whenever MO is around, everyone appreciates the wisdom he brings,” remarked manager Aaron Boone before the game. “What Mariano really excels at is not letting past performances affect him.”

Boone conveyed his intention to create less pressure for Williams to help him regain his confidence.

[Williams] needs a bit more positivity,” said Jorge Posada, an old-timer himself and someone experienced in guiding pitchers through tough phases. “Hopefully, he can get back on track.”
