NASCAR Racer Connor Zilisch Injured in Celebration Accident
Connor Zilisch, a prominent racer in the NASCAR XFINITY series, has faced his share of high-speed dangers over the years, but this time, the risk surfaced during his victory celebration. After taking the lead in the season points standings, he broke his collarbone following an unfortunate fall in the victory lane at Watkins Glen International.
After his sixth win, Zilisch celebrated by climbing atop his No. 88 Chevrolet. However, he inadvertently caught his left foot in the window net and, as he slid down, he awkwardly landed on the asphalt.
At only 19 years old, Zilisch was taken to the Trackside Medical Center and subsequently transferred to a hospital for further examination. He later shared on X that his collarbone was broken but fortunately reported that a CT scan showed no head injuries.
“Thank you for all the support today,” he posted, representing Dale Earnhardt Jr.’s JR Motorsports team. The incident wrapped up a rather intense day for him.
Starting from pole position, Zilisch was involved in a collision with teammate Shane Van Gisbergen and battled for the lead on lap 65. After regrouping from being in fifth place during a restart, he managed to lead the final four laps.
“He did an incredible job,” crew chief Mardy Lindley commented on SiriusXM NASCAR radio post-race. “I’m praying for Connor, and I think he’ll be okay.”
This latest win marked Zilisch’s sixth in the XFINITY series this season and his seventh overall. While he was scheduled to participate in the Go Bowling at The Glen Cup Series race the following Sunday, it’s unclear if he will compete due to his injuries.
Interestingly, Zilisch had only recently achieved 11 consecutive top-five finishes and five victories since his return to racing after missing an earlier season event at Texas Motor Speedway because of a back injury sustained during a crash at Talladega Super Speedway.
His very first victory in the series came at Watkins Glen last year, marking a significant milestone in his racing career.
