Veterans share their thoughts on Aaron Boone and the Yankees' tough circumstances

Yankees’ Struggles and Boone’s Conversations with Torre

It wasn’t the first chat of the season for Aaron Boone and Joe Torre as they connected again before the Yankees edged past the Astros 5-4 on Saturday.

Boone mentioned he has been in touch with Torre quite a bit, especially as the Yankees approach a tough finish to the regular season. In September, the team had a rough patch, going 13-17, which is a far cry from their past championship runs.

As of Saturday, things were also looking bleak for the Yankees; they faced a slump, losing six of their last seven games. They seemed to be in a tight race for the third and final wildcard spot in the American League against the Guardians.

“He’s always around us, so we’ve had our fair share of conversations and texts,” Boone shared regarding Torre. “[Yankees PR head Jason] Zillo reminded me this morning of that 2000 team. After the game, I felt a spark, and we want to keep that momentum going,” Boone conveyed.

If the Yankees can’t get things together soon, Boone—who isn’t exactly popular with fans right now—might find his position under scrutiny.

Last week brought especially tough questions for managers, notably around the use of struggling player Devin Williams.

Interestingly, Torre has complete confidence in Boone. He reminisced about a time in spring training a few years back and reflected on Old Timers Day, which featured an exhibition after a long hiatus since 2019. Though Derek Jeter was absent, he did send a supportive video message.

“What we went through in 2000 was nerve-wracking as we were running out of games,” Torre recalled. “But there are still plenty of games left this time. Boone knows the talent he has; he just needs to harness it.”

Jorge Posada, a former teammate, echoed sentiments regarding Boone’s current situation. “It’s not all his fault,” he remarked. “There are players who aren’t at their best, and that’s tough to navigate.”

He added, “It’s hard to grasp what’s happening behind the scenes. They’ve dealt with injuries to key players, which certainly complicates the mindset needed to win.”
