Rubio Critiques ‘Jesus Christ Superstar’ Performance

Secretary of State Marco Rubio recently commented on the performance of “Jesus Christ Superstar,” expressing his belief that attacks on Christianity aren’t a new phenomenon.

During an interview on EWTN’s “The World,” host Raymond Arroyo inquired about Rubio’s thoughts on possibly elevating a performance featuring “Wicked” star Cynthia Erivo at the Kennedy Center. Rubio, somewhat hesitant, responded, “I don’t keep up with these things, but from what you’ve said, I can see that it’s intended to provoke. For those of faith, I think this isn’t surprising.”

Broadway star Patty Lepon expressed strong opinions about the Kennedy Center, suggesting it needs serious change.

The production of “Jesus Christ Superstar” occurred at the Hollywood Bowl in early August, sparking some concerns among Christians particularly regarding Erivo’s depiction of Jesus as a bisexual character.

Rubio pointed out, “Christianity has faced ridicule and attack since its inception. Actually, churches often grow stronger when they face persecution. When they become too aligned with mainstream culture, that’s when they tend to weaken.”

Moreover, he remarked that Christianity inherently challenges contemporary culture. “That’s just how it’s been. From the beginning, the faith has been countercultural. While we may experience hardships, we should really focus on Christ’s teachings and directives,” he added, conveying his thoughts on the broader implications of faith in today’s society.
