Austin Hill’s Incident at Watkins Glen International
During the NASCAR XFINITY series at Watkins Glen International on Saturday, Austin Hill was involved in a significant crash, which sparked some controversy among fans and fellow drivers. This incident occurred with just nine laps remaining in the race, as Hill, along with Michael McDowell, Zane Smith, and Sam Mayer, were pursuing race leader Connor Zilish.
As they exited Turn 5, Hill collided with the back of McDowell’s car, leading to a chain reaction that involved multiple drivers. Hill commented on the situation, emphasizing that there was no malice intended. “Only two guys are going. Everyone wants to do their best,” he mentioned, indicating the competitive nature of the race. He added that he felt caught off guard while trying to maneuver around McDowell.
McDowell, however, expressed his irritation, stating that Hill had been aggressive in the laps leading up to the crash. He described how Hill “certainly turned me around,” suggesting that it wouldn’t bode well for their future interactions on the track. While he acknowledged that Hill didn’t intentionally hook him, McDowell felt that Hill’s actions during the race were questionable.
The repercussions of the incident are still uncertain. Just a few weeks prior, NASCAR had disciplined Hill for another crash in Iowa, raising questions about his driving style and future penalties. The atmosphere among the drivers is tense, and it’s becoming clear that competitive racing can lead to not only thrilling moments but also heated disputes.
