Jamie Lee Curtis speaks out against the 'harsh' review of 'Freakier Friday'

Jamie Lee Curtis Defends “Freaky Friday” Sequel

Oscar-winning actress Jamie Lee Curtis, 66, has responded to critical reviews of the sequel to her 2003 film, “Freaky Friday,” which starred Lindsay Lohan. Some publications suggested that no demand existed for this follow-up and described the original as a “surprisingly silly generation comedy.”

A review pointed out the sequel as suffering from “ugly costumes,” “humiliating scenarios,” and claimed it primarily exists to draw attention back to the original film.

Curtis commented, “It seems a little harsh. Some people really love it. I’m just one person, though.”

Her remarks garnered significant support on social media, racking up over 17,000 likes, with numerous fans sharing encouraging messages. One fan noted, “As long as you and Lindsay are excited about making it, I know it’s going to be iconic.” Another chimed in, “We all want this and we all love it!”

Another fan expressed excitement, saying, “We can’t wait! People can be so rude!” and someone else playfully suggested, “To make Time Magazine mad, we definitely need a part 3!”

The sequel, titled “Freakier Friday,” announced its release date recently, continues the story of mother-daughter duo Tess (Curtis) and Anna (Lohan) as they swap bodies once again. This time, the plot thickens with a four-way body swap that includes Anna’s daughter (played by Julia Butter) and her soon-to-be stepdaughter (Sophia Hammons).

The cast features returning actors such as Mark Harmon, Chad Michael Murray, Rosalind Chao, Ryan Margarini, Stephen Toborowski, and Lucille Son.

On Rotten Tomatoes, “Freakier Friday” currently holds a 73% critics’ approval rating and an impressive 93% from audiences.

Post critic Johnny Olexinski rated the film 2.5 stars, noting it serves as a nostalgic trip mainly for viewers in their 30s. However, he pointed out that while engaging millennials, the film pokes fun at Gen Z.

In a recent interview, Curtis shared insights into her involvement in the sequel’s development. She recounted a conversation where she remarked, “You can’t make a sequel until Lindsay is old enough to have a teenager.” When reminded that Lohan is now 35, Curtis playfully corrected herself, saying, “I didn’t think she was that old!”

She mentioned discussing the idea further with Bob Chapek, leading to the sequel we see today.
