The Giants have been entrenched in their training camp for over two weeks now, having already played one preseason game. Victor Cruz, a Super Bowl champion and former wide receiver, senses something unique about this year’s squad.
Cruz, who expressed confidence back in June that the Giants would have a winning season, spoke with a reporter on Monday about the positive vibe surrounding the team.
“There’s a different energy and a real focus on the details among the players, and it’s contagious. You can see it on the field,” Cruz mentioned before participating in the APGA MasterCard Tour Championship Pro-Am at the Golf Link at Barry at Ferry Point.
“Sure, it’s just one game, but we’ll see how the preseason unfolds. The regular season is really where the true story is told,” he added.
This season marks the third for head coach Brian Daball and general manager Joe Shane with the Giants.
The Giants had a significant offseason, selecting edge rusher Abdul Carter and quarterback Jackson Dart in the first round of the April draft.
“They’re getting the type of athletes that can really contribute to this team,” Cruz noted before addressing another critical acquisition. “Bringing in Russell Wilson, well, that’s a game-changer; his experience and leadership can really shift the dynamics.”
“It might seem like a small thing, but having someone like him on the roster can make a huge difference,” he added.
The Giants kicked off their preseason with a game on Saturday, where Dart completed 12 passes for 154 yards and one touchdown.
His most notable throw was a 28-yard touchdown pass to Lil Jordan Humphrey in the second quarter.
“Jackson really had a lot of opportunities, and it was exciting to watch him,” Cruz reflected. “He’s still adapting, making typical rookie mistakes, but his athleticism and ability to make plays with his feet impressed me.”
On Monday, Cruz participated in the Pro Am event leading up to the MasterCard Tour Championship. This championship is part of the APGA Tour, a nonprofit organization committed to fostering inclusivity in golf.
Having become an avid golfer over the past four years, Cruz expressed enthusiasm for the chance to learn from experienced professionals and share insights from his NFL journey.
“I’m thrilled to be here and hope to absorb as much knowledge as possible,” he mentioned.
