Do Kwon Anticipated to Admit Guilt in $40 Billion Terra Downfall

Do Kwon Facing Guilty Plea in Terra Crypto Collapse

Do Kwon, the figure behind the failed crypto project Terra, is anticipated to plead guilty, according to recent court documents.

A scheduling order for potential changes in the US lawsuit against Kwon was filed ahead of a scheduled meeting on August 12.

Previously, Kwon had pleaded not guilty in a New York court to criminal charges, including fraud linked to a 2022 project collapse that left a staggering $40 billion in losses for investors.

Kwon established the Terra ecosystem, which included the popular Luna Token and the algorithmic stablecoin, TerraUSD (UST). It had promised attractive returns, serving as an entry point for many into the decentralized financial realm. At its peak in April 2022, Luna achieved a market capitalization exceeding $40 billion.

However, UST struggled to maintain its dollar peg. When it faltered, the entire ecosystem unraveled, leading to massive losses.

Authorities allege that Kwon misled investors about fictitious projects to significantly enrich himself. Facing charges in both the US and South Korea, he has been accused of a variety of crimes.

Kwon is confronted with nine criminal charges in the US, including securities fraud, wire fraud, and conspiracy to commit money laundering.

The collapse had a reverberating impact on the crypto market, triggering a severe downturn. Numerous top crypto projects were exposed to Terra, with companies involved in borrowing and lending, such as BlockFi and Genesis, ultimately going bankrupt, especially after the crypto exchange FTX’s downfall in 2022.

Following Terra’s failure, the crypto market saw dramatic declines. Bitcoin, for instance, fell to under $16,000—a drop of 80% from its 2021 price.
