Sha'Carri Richardson speaks out about her arrest related to the airport situation

US Olympic sprinter Sha’Carri Richardson recently shared that she’s been seeking “a certain level of help” following her arrest on July 27 on domestic violence charges at Seattle Airport.

The 25-year-old is reported to have pushed her boyfriend, fellow sprinter Christian Coleman, several times, as seen in surveillance footage from Seattle-Tacoma International Airport.

“More than anything, I definitely put myself in a situation where I compromise with someone who cares deeply,” Richardson reflected. “I am taking this time not only to see myself but to get the help I need to truly reflect on who I am in my heart and spirit.”

She expressed gratitude for her support system and emphasized accountability. “I refuse to run away; it’s important for me to take responsibility for becoming my best self,” she stated.

Richardson, who won gold in the 4x100m relay and silver in the 100m at the 2024 Paris Olympics, was involved in a heated argument with Coleman that turned physical. Officers reviewed footage that allegedly showed her grabbing and tugging on Coleman’s backpack.

The video evidently indicates multiple instances where Richardson pushed Coleman. At one point, she seemed to throw something, possibly headphones, at him, leading to her arrest for fourth-degree domestic violence.

Richardson spent around 19 hours in arrest before the Seattle Police Department cleared the incident. Coleman, who is 29, expressed that he didn’t believe his girlfriend should have been arrested. “Personally, I think it was a disgusting situation,” he commented. “I don’t think she should be arrested.”

Coleman, who has been with Richardson for over two years, added, “I’m the type of person who believes in grace, mercy, and love. This whole situation is negative. Even the police said, ‘There’s not much I can do.’”

After the incident, Richardson participated in the 2025 US Championships, withdrawing from the 100m event, where she finished fourth in the 200m heat. It’s worth noting she missed the 2021 Olympics, delayed from 2020, due to a positive marijuana test.
