Rep. Byron Donald Introduces Crime Bill for Washington, DC
Rep. Byron Donald (R-FL) has reintroduced legislation aimed at addressing the increase in crime in Washington, DC, through specific crime reforms. This bill, known as the DC Crimes law, seeks to tackle what has been termed the “Crime Soft” policy, which some argue has contributed to a surge in criminal activity.
According to a press release from Donald’s office, the bill focuses on juvenile offenses by redefining “young people” in DC to include those aged 24 and under 18, categorizing individuals over 18 as adults. It also removes judicial discretion, mandating minimum sentences for youth offenders and preventing the DC Council from making further changes to mandatory minimum sentencing and guidelines.
Donald, who is campaigning to become Florida’s next governor, expressed concern over the rising violence in the nation’s capital, attributing it to “soft crime policies” enacted by local leaders on the far left. He stated, “The weak leadership by anti-cop radicals has caused confusion. The terrifying situation faced by innocent residents and visitors in our capital must end.”
“The American people deserve better,” he added. “I will not stand idly by while our capital is in chaos. My DC Crime Act will restore law and order to the district.”
Additionally, on Monday, former President Donald Trump also addressed the crime issue in DC, referring to it as a “public safety emergency.” He remarked, “This is an emergency. It’s tragic and embarrassing to witness.” Trump shared his plans to meet with Russian President Putin but emphasized that the rise in drug-related crimes and homelessness must not continue.
He proposed returning control of the DC Metropolitan Police Department to federal oversight, indicating a revitalization of law enforcement in the area.
