EUR/GBP remains stable around 0.8650 as investors look forward to UK GDP figures
  • The EUR/GBP hovers around 0.8650 in the early European session on Wednesday.
  • Eu Zew’s financial sentiment took a nosedive in August.
  • Investors speculate on a possible BOE rate cut following UK employment data.

The EUR/GBP appears to be trading at approximately 0.8650 this morning. The Euro seems to be gaining a bit more ground against the Pound Sterling, especially with sanctions discussed for Friday in relation to a potential meeting involving Alaska’s Russian President, Vladimir Putin. Market watchers will be keeping an eye on the upcoming preliminary report for the UK’s GDP in the second quarter, expected later on Thursday.

In another noteworthy move, the US and Russia have agreed to a meeting between Trump and Putin this Friday, focusing on how to bring an end to the war in Ukraine. This announcement came a week ago, coinciding with Trump’s deadline for Russia to either agree to a ceasefire or face additional US sanctions.

While the talks between the US and Russia have spurred optimism and somewhat supported the shared currency, there’s a significant cloud hanging over the Eurozone. The recent Zew survey for August revealed a steep drop in sentiment, which could work in favor of cross-trading. Specifically, the Eurozone’s Zew economic sentiment fell from 36.1 in July to 25.1 in August, and Germany saw a slide from 34.7 to 52.7, both figures missing market expectations.

Turning to the GBP, the UK job market has once again shown signs of weakness, yet wage growth remains robust. This has prompted traders to consider the likelihood of another rate cut from the Bank of England (BOE) this year. Data from LSEG suggests that the market is fully anticipating another cut only by February 2026. The cautious stance of the UK Central Bank may eventually see the GBP rise against the EUR.
