Michael Phelps Advocates for Change in US Swimming Program

Former Olympic swimmer Michael Phelps has voiced serious concerns about the current state of the US swimming program. He believes it is experiencing a troubling decline and has taken to social media to share his thoughts in a lengthy statement.

Phelps, in a five-page post on Instagram, reiterated the need for immediate action within USA Swimming. He expressed empathy for teammates who are finding it increasingly difficult to compete effectively, partly due to a lack of support. He noted that while medals are still being won, this shouldn’t mask the underlying issues, particularly the drop in membership numbers seen since the pandemic.

“For me, swimming has always meant more than just winning medals,” Phelps stated. “It should foster an environment where champions are built both in and out of the pool.” He also shared his uncertainty about whether his own sons will want to pursue competitive swimming in the future.

Surprisingly, Phelps began his comments not with direct criticism, but by emphasizing that the leadership for change should come from individuals within USA Swimming, rather than external sources. He pointed out a significant decline in performance, referencing that Team USA secured only 44% of the medals at the recent Paris Games, the lowest figure since 1988.

While Phelps acknowledged financial challenges, he criticized the organization for its poor management and lack of effective leadership. Not one to just criticize without offering solutions, he committed to being a resource for American swimming moving forward.

Phelps suggested that USA Swimming undergo an independent review to reassess its operations. He stressed the importance of adopting an athlete-first mentality to better support swimmers aiming for elite competition while also nurturing aspiring young athletes.

He also mentioned a recent post from former teammate Ryan Lochte, who shared a somber image depicting a funeral for US swimming. This sparked Phelps’s questioning of whether the upcoming 2025 World Championship could serve as a much-needed wake-up call for the organization.

As a renowned athlete, Phelps has amassed an impressive 23 Olympic gold medals throughout his career, a record that remains unmatched. Team USA recently successfully secured nine golds at the latest World Championships, leading all participating nations in medal count.

Phelps’s candid remarks reflect a deep commitment to the sport, providing hope for positive change in the future of US swimming.
