Goldschmidt’s Injury Update and Team Dynamics
Paul Goldschmidt had what looked like a perfect opportunity to step in as a pinch hitter for Austin Wells in the seventh inning on Wednesday night, but that didn’t happen. Later, Aaron Boone explained the situation.
Goldschmidt missed playing the previous night due to a minor sprain in his right knee. Boone mentioned that Goldschmidt could end up on the injured list after their 4-1 defeat against the Twins, although the star player is optimistic that the inflammation will subside soon.
“I felt like I could keep playing, but I decided to check out today,” he said. “There are opportunities, but I don’t think it’s anything long-term—maybe just a day or two.”
Wells managed to get a runner on third and faced left-handed pitcher Kody Funderburk during that seventh inning.
With Giancarlo Stanton starting multiple games in right field, Jackson Dominguez has become somewhat of an odd presence in the Yankees’ outfield lineup. Domínguez had come into Wednesday’s game with just one hit from his last 19 at-bats since August 2, which is a bit concerning.
“Yeah, a bit of that. I mean, he’s fine,” Boone commented about Dominguez. “It’s day-to-day, and I’m just trying to do what I can. Obviously, I’m aiming to win every day.” He emphasized that Dominguez is vital to the team, noting that it’s just a small segment in a long season.
Interestingly, with Aaron Judge focusing on designated hitter tasks for the past eight games, Stanton (who was 1-4 in the latest game) started his fourth outing in the outfield after a long break from the position since 2023.
Boone also noted Judge’s increased activity in the outfield on Wednesday, stating that they’re working to gradually bring him back. “He’s been up to around 120 feet in practice, and he might throw to a base soon,” Boone shared, but he wasn’t certain about Judge’s return to right field during the upcoming series in St. Louis.
On another note, pitchers Ryan Yarbra and Fernando Cruz are set to begin assignments with the Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre team starting Thursday.
