Mookie Betts explains the backing from Dodgers teammates and fans during a challenging season

Mookie Betts Reflects on Challenging Season with the Dodgers

Mookie Betts, the eight-time All-Star with the Los Angeles Dodgers, recently opened up about his struggles this season, admitting that he feels “the season is over.” He mentioned this during a conversation over the weekend, stating, “My season is over.” Despite the difficulties, he emphasized his desire to contribute to the team’s success, suggesting, “I can help the boys win every night, do something, get an RBI.”

For a player of Betts’ caliber, a slump can be especially tough mentally. However, he found solace in the support from fans at Dodger Stadium and elsewhere, which helped shift his mindset. Betts noted, “I never spurred from anything bad,” and he mentioned his involvement in a project blending the sounds of baseball with beach vibes, called “Playa Sounds,” which he found unique and inspiring.

Entering Wednesday’s matchup against the Los Angeles Angels, Betts’ stats tell a challenging story: a batting average of .242 with an OPS of .682 alongside 12 home runs and 53 RBIs—his worst career numbers. It’s a stark contrast to his performance in 2018 when he was named AL MVP. He expressed concern about how this might affect perceptions of his career, especially as he aspires to Hall of Fame credentials.

Amid these struggles, Betts has found strength in the camaraderie of the Dodgers’ clubhouse. He remarked on the importance of having teammates and coaches who support him through ups and downs, saying, “They’re with you every day. You’re with these people essentially for eight months. They know everything about you.” He also acknowledged the valuable perspective and encouragement he receives from veteran players.

Recently, Betts has shown signs of improvement, enjoying a small hitting streak of seven games and launching his first home run in over a month against the Toronto Blue Jays. He explained his mindset, saying, “You don’t want to be in a different headspace than you’ve been playing for six or seven months.” With the Dodgers in the thick of a tight NL West race, he understands the importance of maintaining composure as they aim to defend their title in October.

As he prepares for the postseason, Betts recognizes the need to cultivate a focused mindset. His partnership with Corona in creating “Playa Sounds” aims to help him relax while gearing up for what’s ahead. He described this process, mixing memories of significant postseason moments with calming beach sounds, allowing him to strike a balance between intensity and tranquility.

Betts concluded by sharing how this approach has positively impacted him, stating, “It really helped me and put me in a good way.” His dedication to improvement amidst challenges suggests a resilient spirit as the Dodgers strive for greatness this season.
