TIFF Removes Documentary on Hamas Attack
The Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) has decided to pull a documentary that focuses on the 2023 Hamas assault on Israel, citing various legal complications surrounding the film.
The documentary, titled “The Road: The Ultimate Rescue,” created by Canadian filmmaker Barry Avrich, narrates the story of Norm Tibon, a retired Israeli general who managed to save his son’s stepdaughter and grandson during the events of October 7th.
TIFF communicated that the film was removed because it did not fulfill the primary criteria for festival inclusion and that necessary legal permissions for all footage had been retracted.
Filmmakers have expressed concerns about what they perceive as “censorship.”
In a statement, Avrich said, “We are shocked and saddened that the venerable film festival ignored its mission and rejected the film and censored its own programming. Film is a form of art that should evoke discussions from various perspectives, even if it makes us uncomfortable.”
On the contrary, TIFF CEO Cameron Bailey countered the accusations of censorship in a statement made on Wednesday. He noted, “My intention was to screen ‘The Road Between Us: The Ultimate Rescue’; I believe it tells an important story relevant to this year’s festival lineup.”
Despite the controversy, Bailey insists that the film’s rejection was due to technicalities rather than suppression. He mentioned ongoing efforts to ensure the screening requirements could be met.
According to reports, filmmakers were required to specifically identify disturbing footage that was live-streamed by Hamas on the day of the attack. They also had to provide sources for this footage and confirmation of legal permits.
At the last festival, TIFF showcased a film titled “The War of the Russians,” focusing on Russian soldiers amid the Ukraine conflict, which garnered accusations of being Russian propaganda.
